Madrid, Spain – Canada secured an 82-69 victory over Mali to advance to the semifinals, although they had to overcome a scare in the final quarter when they almost squandered their 19-point lead. However, with the exit of some key opposing players and an exceptional performance from Toby Fournier, they managed to regain control and secure the win.

“WE NEED TO MAINTAIN OUR TEAM ENERGY ON THE COURT AND ON THE BENCH. HOPEFULLY, THAT WILL HELP US CONTINUE WINNING.” – Toby Fournier

The success was built on Fournier’s brilliance, as she became only the 10th player in history to achieve a double-double of over 20 points and 20 rebounds. She also recorded the third-highest rebound total of all time by grabbing 23 rebounds in addition to her 20 points and 3 blocks. Cassandre Prosper also stood out with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists, while Syla Swords scored 21 points.

Sira Thienou was outstanding for Mali with 20 points and 8 rebounds. Maimouna Haidara, although contained in the game, recorded her 5th double-double of the competition with 11 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 steals. Point guard Fatoumata Sanou also contributed with 15 points and 8 rebounds.

Thus, the impressive performance of the Malian team ends here with this elimination. It is worth noting that in 2021, Mali reached the semifinals of the FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup.
