Purdue falls to Michigan (62-49), Doumbia achieves double figures performance

Facing a top-15 opponent, the Purdue women’s basketball team dropped a hard-fought contest to No. 12 Michigan on Thursday night at Mackey Arena 62-49.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Purdue Sports) – Facing a top-15 opponent, the Purdue women’s basketball team dropped a hard-fought contest to No. 12 Michigan on Thursday night at Mackey Arena 62-49.

The Boilermakers (6-10, 3-9) placed a trio of players in double figures, led by Kayana Traylor’s 15 points in her second consecutive complete game. The junior went 6-of-13 from the field and 2-of-5 from behind the arc with a pair of assists and a season-high three steals.

Rokia Doumbia made the most of a season-high 29 minutes on the floor with her first game as a Boilermaker in double figures on 10 points from 3-of-4 shooting and a 4-of-6 night at the line to go along with six rebounds, three assists and a career-high three steals. Madison Layden also went for double figures with 13 points, including a trio of 3-pointers.

Purdue shot 46.2% from the field and went 6-of-14 from behind the arc, with the long ball keeping the Boilermakers within striking distance throughout the second half. The Boilermakers pushed the pace scoring over a quarter of their points on the fast break.

Defensively, Purdue held the Wolverines (11-1, 6-1) to a 38.9% clip from the field, their third-lowest mark this season. Michigan committed a season-high 20 turnovers that led to 12 Purdue points.

Both teams relied on defense early with a total of four points scored in the opening five minutes, as the two clubs evenly split 16 turnovers in the first quarter. The Wolverines used a four-point swing to take a 12-6 lead after 10 minutes.

In the second, Michigan built the lead up to 11, before Purdue responded from beyond the arc. Layden drained a pair of triples to take her consecutive game streak to 14 games, while Jenelle Grant and Traylor each connected on a trifecta to help Purdue go 4-8 from distance in the second.

Michigan shot 60% from the field over the opening 20 minutes to Purdue’s 39.1% clip to take a 31-24 into the locker room.

Following a 11-point run out of the break by Michigan, Purdue strung together an 11-0 run of their own. Doumbia tallied seven during the streak, as the Boilermakers dwindled the gap down to seven with 1:35 to play in the third.

The Boilermakers attempts to claw back from a double-digit deficit in the fourth, going 5-of-10 from the field with eight points from Traylor, but the visitors turned four offensive rebounds into six points to fend off any comeback attempt.

The Wolverines were led offensively by Naz Hillmon’s 21 points and 20 points from Leigha Brown in their first game back after a mandatory two-week pause.
