The young Mali international arrives to reinforce the exterior game of the Vigo team.

Maimouna Haidara, a 19-year-old Mali forward, has become Celta Zorka Recalvi’s second foreign signing for the upcoming season, following the acquisition of American player Trahan-David.

The young Malian player, who already participated with her national team in the last World Cup held in Australia, is not new to Spanish basketball as she comes from Tenerife’s Adareva, where she played last season in the Liga Challenge and was one of the key players for the Canary Islands team. In fact, she averaged almost twelve points per game, along with over seven rebounds and two assists. For the player, joining Celta also means her jump to the top category of Spanish women’s basketball.

With Haidara’s arrival, the Vigo team strengthens its exterior game, one of its pending issues in this transfer market, with a player who is not a great long-distance shooter but has always had good shooting percentages. However, her weak point lies in free throws, where she managed to reach 60% last season. Two years ago, she barely surpassed 40%, which is a surprising figure in professional basketball. But where she can be a very important player is thanks to her rebounding ability, as her numbers have always been interesting, and the 7.6 rebounds she averaged last season guarantee that the Vigo team can have significant help in that aspect of the game.

The fact that the Mali international has already been in Spanish basketball is a significant help for Celta Zorka Recalvi and Cristina Cantero’s project, as adaptation will always be easier. In the Canary Islands, Haidara was actually involved in a small dispute between Adareva and Clarinos, who owned the player at the beginning of the summer. The Tenerife club tried to loan her, but the purple team set impossible conditions to close the deal. Faced with these circumstances and pushed by the Tenerife team, the player unilaterally terminated her contract and went to play for Adareva, where she played last season. Once her stay in Tenerife was over, the Vigo club showed interest in signing her, and they have reached an agreement for her to become the second foreign player signed in this transfer market by the Vigo team, following American center Trahan-Davis. The remaining moves to complete the squad for the upcoming season are expected in the next week.
