KIGALI, Rwanda, June 03, 2023/ — Petro de Luanda becomes the first sub-Saharan team to win the BAL Finals (; Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. (Al Ahly Ly, Libya) is named MVP and Defender of the Year 2024.

Petro de Luanda (Angola) today beat Al Ahly Ly (Libya) 107-94 to claim the 2024 African Basketball League (ABL) title. The final took place at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda, and was broadcast in 214 countries and territories and 17 languages. The 2022 finalists and one of only two teams to have participated in all four editions of the BAL, Petro de Luanda now become the first sub-Saharan team to win the BAL final, following previous champions Egypt and Tunisia.

Following the final, Amadou Gallo Fall (President of the BAL) and Anibal Manave (President of FIBA Africa) presented the Petro de Luanda with the BAL Champion Trophy and Al Ahly Ly winger Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. with the Hakeem Olajuwon Trophy for MVP 2024 and the Dikembe Mutombo Trophy for BAL Defender 2024.

Petro de Luanda emerged 5-2 winners from the Kalahari Conference in Pretoria, South Africa, before defeating AS Douanes (Senegal) and Cape Town Tigers (South Africa) in the quarter-finals and semi-finals. In yesterday’s third-place play-off, Nigeria’s Rivers Hoopers came from behind to beat Cape Town Tigers 80-57.

Lual-Acuil Jr. is also the 2024 leading scorer and was named to the All-BAL First Team and All-BAL Defensive Team after contributing, during the Nile Conference in Cairo, Egypt, to Al Ahly Ly’s (5-4) qualification for the playoffs, recording an average of 21.1 points, 9.9 rebounds and 1.6 steals.

Several former NBA players attended the BAL 2024 playoff and finals games, including BAL Ambassadors and NBA Africa investors Luol Deng (South Sudan), Ian Mahinmi (France; Beninese origins) and Joakim Noah (Cameroonian grandfather); 2015 NBA champion Festus Ezeli (Nigeria), and New York Knicks President of Operations Pops Mensah-Bonsu (Ghana).

BAL also announced the Coach 2024, the winner of the Best Sportsmanship Award, the All-BAL First Team, the All-BAL Defensive Team, and the winner of the Ubuntu Award. Each award had its own jury, made up of fans, coaches, team captains, journalists, broadcasters and observers.

Ubuntu 2024 Prize
Alkaly Ndour, fullback and captain of AS Douanes, wins the Ubuntu 2024 Prize in recognition of his ongoing efforts to enhance the practice of basketball to have a positive impact on the youth of his native Senegal. Ndour is the founder of Kayelennioufo (let’s have fun), a basketball tournament bringing together some 250 amateur players in his native Bopp district of Dakar. Ndour received the Ubuntu 2024 Trophy during a ceremony held on May 25 in conjunction with Africa Day.
