BAL: ABC beats Customs 76-70 at opening of Sahara conference

The opening ceremony of the third season of the Sahara Conference was chaired by the president of the Basketball Africa League, Amadou Gallo Fall who was accompanied by the president of the FIBA World Hamane Niang and several personalities from the ball to the basket.

Abidjan Basket Club Fighters secured a crucial 76-70 win over host AS Douanes in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) Sahara Conference opener in Dakar. The Nigerian Abdoulaye Harouna with 25 points achieved an excellent performance to carry the Ivorian team to victory.

At the start of the game, it was the Ivorians of Abidjan Basket Club who opened hostilities with a nice three-point shot from Fofana. The answer will not be long on the AS Douane side with Marcus Christopher Crawfor. ABC dominated the first and second quarters to finish 43-31 at the break.

The last quarter is dominated by the Senegalese AS Douane who jostle the players of coach Liz Mills, the ABC Fighters try to keep their advantage as best they can. The Senegalese public came in large numbers to destabilize the opposing team. The Customs team is down to two points (62-60). A mano to mano settles between the two teams. But C’est Abidjan Basket Club won by the score of (76 -70).

Nigerian Abdoulaye Harouna with 25 points (5 in 10 to 3pts) inspired the Ivorian team to victory. Mike Fofana, the other ABC player added 21 points.

“We are very happy to win this first game of the competition, because it will allow us to have a psychological advantage and our strength this evening was the collective and the experiences. We will do everything to validate our ticket for Rwanda” confides, Stephane Konaté, captain of the ABC. On the AS Douane side, Terrell Stoglin and Marcus Crawford’s 21 and 17 points were not enough to allow a Senegalese team to win a first opening match of the Sahara Conference in Dakar.

“Seriously, we were on top for this defeat against the Abidjanains of ABC, especially since the public responded favorably. I think we lost the war and not the

battle, we are going to do everything we can to win our second game this Tuesday,” said the captain of As Douanes, Alkaly Ndour.
